Over the last couple of weeks the International Section at the JL campus have been working on their GAW projects. Each class chose a country to do a mini study on. Activities ranged from art, storytelling, creating power point presentations and having a festival of food were some of the aspects covered. We also held a Where’s Wally (Mr Chadwick) competition throughout the week. Some classes have given an insight into what they did.
The Reception classes had a wonderful week learning all about the 'Land of fire and ice'...ICELAND! We enjoyed dressing up as volcanoes and icebergs and performing a dance by Icelandic pop princess Bjork to the rest of the International Section. Our parents made some special treats for us to enjoy...volcano cupcakes, iceberg marshmallows...yum. What a fantastic week! Y4A and B today visited Central Library in Causeway Bay, to attend an author talk by Uma Krishnaswami. Uma is an award winning children’s book author, whose books have been translated into 11 different languages. The children were inspired by her experiences and stories.
Congratulations also to Talara Carson in Y4B, whose drawing was chosen by Blair Reeve as one of this year's winners! Talara wins signed copy of Blair’s book and two free tickets to Blair’s HKYRF event. Her picture was based on the poem called Hedgehog.
Today, Priya (Zoya's mum) and Anuja (Vedika's mum) came to our class to teach the children about Holi. The Indian festival celebrates all that is similar in humanity. We heard a story told in puppeteer style with various Indian gods. We did some finger painting, then spread organic natural powder to celebrate the festival of colours and learned about colour mixing. Finally, every child took home a delicious Indian samosa. The children enjoy every part of the afternoon and learned something new about a different culture.
We appreciate Priya and Anuja for taking the time to come and share this with our class. We have attached some photos of our afternoon. Diane Toufeili On Tuesday the 15th March, a parent, Sam Gaudois came in to give a very interesting insight into the world of advertising as part of Y4’s ‘Have I got a deal for you!’ Social Studies topic. The children learnt about of the tricks of the trade, and had many questions to ask!
In the afternoon a class of FIS Year 8 students travelled to Jardines along with Mr Wilson and Mr McEntire, to spend an hour presenting a product they had made (a chocolate bar) and then they assisted the Year 4’s in developing ideas for advertising their cereal boxes or a toy to promote. Both classes had a great time on Tuesday and would like to thank again Sam and the Year 8’s for coming in and sharing their knowledge and expertise. Richard Phillips |
