"It's been an incredible 10 years and I look forward to bring back new ideas after a year of study in London. See you all very soon. I hope you all had awonderful year and I cannot wait to see you all back in 2017. "Mr Wan - Music Teacher
"It is with a great deal of sadness that I leave FIS this year. Over the past three years I have worked with every student in the primary section, and they have been a great bunch to teach- they’ve always been interested in their learning, and they’ve always kept me on my toes! As specialist teacher, I have taught them for three consecutive years, and seeing such long term growth and development has been particularly rewarding. My colleagues are lucky to continue working with these students next year, and they are equally lucky to have such great teachers again next year. As I am not leaving Hong Kong, but moving on to a new position at a school in Discovery Bay, in the years ahead I hope to be able to bump into plenty of you to say, "Hello' or 'Bonjour'! "Christopher Jackson  - Primary Science Teacher

" It has been such a joy and learning experience to teach Mandarin at FIS these last few years.  To the staff, students, and parents I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support of new initiatives and approaches to language learning.  I am reluctant to leave but enthusiastic about the opportunity to build on these approaches to learning at a new school in Hong Kong that is very close to our home in the New Territories.  I want to wish each of you every success in all that you do now and in the future!"
Sincerely, Wu Laoshi "Lucy McEntire - Mandarin Teacher

Year 7 students talk about life at Secondary

Visiting Chai Wan brought back so many good memories. As we sat in the taxi on the way there, we started recalling all of them, realizing how much we had missed our old campus.
Once we reached, we were taken straight to the classroom where all the Year 6's were waiting. We entered and saw our former teachers, Mr. Guise and Mr. Cameron. Soon after, we presented to the Year 6's our presentation, titled the 'Year 7 Survival Handbook'.
We would like to thank Mme Leonard for organizing this little contest. It was a great learning experience, and we got to re-visit the campus that had prepared us to survive Year 7.

The lessons included age appropriate breathing techniques, physical postures and relaxation. Yoga has so many benefits for children, including building strength, flexibility, developing balance and co-ordination, aiding digestion, calming, de-stressing, building self confidence and self esteem...the list is so long!

On Monday the 13th June the JL campus held their book day. We had all classes dressing up in various book characters from Roald Dahl stories to pirates and children in PJ’s.  Each class were doing a variety of activities to celebrate book day, but the highlight for most was the Jackanory time. Children got to choose to visit another class and hear a story being read. It was a great experience having children from Reception to Y4 mixing in classrooms to listen to the stories. In the afternoon children from Y2 –Y4 were treated to an author visit from Bhakti Mathur. She talked to the classes about her stories and read a couple to them. A great experience having a published author in to visit.

Participation in the Children's Book Award “ Le prix des Incorruptibles” for Year 5 French speakers :
Throughout the year, students have read and worked enthusiastically on five books from the selection.
In May , they voted in the classroom and elected the book " La Louve " (The Wolf) written by Clemence Beauvais and illustrated by Antoine Deprez .
This same book was also chosen by the majority of CE2 / CM1 (Y4 / Y5) classes participating around the world and therefore
won the 2016  Prix des Incorruptibles.
It's a story about friendship , magic and mystery which appealed to the children.
Finally Year 5 pupils were proud to receive in class their certificate for participating this year’s book award .
Participation to the “ Prix Azimut”  for French speakers in  Year 6 :
By taking part in this award , our students have addressed the question of art through reading five novels.
This hard work has allowed a written exchange with the year 7 in the secondary section.
Indeed, the two classes have created and shared in turns reading quizzes .
In addition, they met storyteller Muriel Bloch , author of one of the 5 books during her visit to the school, when the children had the opportunity to ask questions in French.
Finally, the presentation to the class by Mrs. Dam, a student’s mother who studied at the Ecole du Louvre, enlightened the children on rock art ( theme addressed by the Azimut Prize)

The internationally well-known Mandarin singing British rock group “Transition” visited FIS on Monday, June 6th.  A few of their original compositions were used as unit hook songs in the curriculum these last few years with the most notable being their smash hit “Dui Bu Qi” with their professional music video here and our own students singing with them at the close of their show at Jardine’s Lookout here.  Besides a powerful and highly energetic concert in the afternoon attended by Y3-Y6 students in the auditorium, they were also able to conduct song writing workshops in Mandarin with several classes using original student generated lyrics that piggy backed the well-known chorus.  The annual Mandarin awards were presented and the students who received them this term had the honour of being congratulated by the band members on stage.  A 5X7 photo commemorating their achievement will be presented to each student.  Another highlight was our very own FIS students took the stage and performed their recent ‘Chinese Idol’ competition songs for Transition.  Two groups combined to fill the stage.  You can view their rehearsals leading up to their final performances hereand here.  Finally, a whole audience dance that Josh taught to one of Transition前進樂團’s covers  of伍佰 - 妳是我的花朵 “You are my Flower” by 500 redefined excitement.  It can be found on Youtubehere.
All in all it was a fun filled day with some very famous yet generous musicians and teachers!
The band offered to ship personalized and autographed CDs to any student or staff member.  Even though the offer has lapsed their music is widely available via iTunes and other online sources.
You may continue the learning journey with the following free resources available online and support the band through the links below.  Enjoy your summer!  Wu Laoshi

Day 1  Thursday 26th May
Y6 went to Blue Pool road to be introduced to the campus. They met the current Y8 students of FIS. They were introduced to their amazing buddies and then ate some delicious snacks with them.
After their snack and chat session they went to a taster of the science lessons with Mrs. Relan or Mr. Maclean, which they’ll be experiencing in Secondary. They went to taste a bit of their future history classes with Mr. Burgmann and Mr. Clayton.
When they finished their delightful lessons, they went up to the canteen to have lunch with their buddies. Once they finished their lunch, they went to take a group photo with the whole of Y8. They went to have a tour of the library or go on a scavenger hunt with their buddies and then vice-versa.
They then went to have a taster of Latin and Spanish with Mr. Pham and Mrs. Bersia-Lam. When they finished all of their lessons, they went back to the canteen to wrap up and say good bye.
Thank You Mr. Cameron, Mr. Guise, Mr. Clayton, Mrs. Leonard, Mrs. Relan, Mr. Maclean, Mr. Burgmann, Mr. Pham, Mrs Bersia-Lam and all the Y8s for this wonderful visit to Secondary.

On May 4th, our team of nine attended the semi-finals held at ISF Academy with 6 schools in attendance. They started strongly and were leading at half-time. Sadly for us (and good for them!) the ISF team finished really well and pipped us at the post, so we settled for a close second. A tremendous effort put in by the team, congratulations!

Martha Keswick author of ;the Max and Mei  series and Pangu children’s books was in School last week for a story telling session with the classes. Martha wrote her books in Mandarin and she read some of the Max and Mei  series to our younger students. She was delightful and so interesting the students were really taken by her stores and her storytelling style where she worked in both English and Mandarin
Martha’s Pangu stories were a big success with our Y3/4 student
She really was a hit with them and they with her; they liked the story lines and illustrations. Again she read in both English and Mandarin. We aim to purchase sets of the books for our libraries Our thanks go to Lucy McEntire for organising the sessions
