The Junior Disco was held last Friday in the canteen and it was a success! The Year 7, 8 and 9 attended and all had so much fun! They were all dancing, laughing and having a good time. Our theme was ‘Fame’; we saw many great costumes from Michael Jackson to Julius Cesar! Thanks to ‘DJ Wonder Woman’, the music got everyone pumped up and dancing! We just want to thank the IT Department which helped set up the lighting and sound system, we would also like to thank all the teachers who gave up their time to help cheaper. Without them the evening would not have been possible. Hope you all had fun! Elisabeth Van Gaver -year 12

David Petraeus Asian Society talk

12/10/2015

On Thursday, December 3, the Asia Society in Admiralty was hosting the ex-CIA director David Petraeus. He has also served more than 37 years in the US army, rising to rank of general and being one of the high commanders in the US-led coalition in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Asia Society was kind enough to invite many local schools to be able to attend this unique event, offering a buffet dinner and re-transmitting Petraeus' speech, who was in another room talking in front of {adult guests/paying people}. In an auditorium with about 100 other students from Hong Kong, we listened to Petraeus talk about most of today's current issues, such as the European Union, the growth of China, the current Middle Eastern crisis, etc. It was very interesting to see the opinions of such an influential man who had been on the ground and knew a lot more about how the world works than we do.

To elaborate on the above, Petraeus talked about the downfall of europe, specifically, how the two world wars devastated europe as a whole. How europe was forced to recover whereas the US was still developing at a rapid rate. This would lead to the eventual prospering of the USA. He compared this growth rate with the growth rate of China, one of the few countries to have a double digit growth rate (GDP). Obviously, as the ex-head of CIA, Petraeus was asked about the current situation in the Middle East with ISIS and other current affairs. He commented on how Edward Snowden devastated the intelligence sources of the CIA, which was very interesting and thought provoking. Overall, it was really a powerful conversation to listen to and was really captivating as the topics discussed were very relatable and relatively easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and also appreciated how much it linked to my common sense knowledge about modern affairs. The talk reminded me how important it is for us to know about our surrounding world, and how reading the newspaper regularly really helps to keep us up to date with current affairs.
