![]() In primary, it was great to go home to tell your parents that you scored 10/10 on your spelling test. But going home to tell your parents you won a spelling bee, which feels amazing. The Spellbulary, organized by the Kelly Yang Project, is an annual spelling bee. Its purpose is to encourage children to learn words, and show them the fun in learning. These days, nobody pays much attention to spelling because of tools like spell-check. The competition’s aim is to bring back the significance of vocabulary. I always found spelling fun, so I decided to participate. The words were based off a book, so as preparation I read the book, noted down the words I didn’t know and found the definitions. The way the spelling bee works is you are given a word, if you spell it incorrectly you are asked to give the definition, or use the word in a sentence. If you cannot do either of those in within the time given, you are eliminated. However, if you successfully give the definition, or use the word in a sentence, you are given another word to spell. Should you spell that word wrong, you are automatically eliminated. This competition was unique. For the first time, two siblings won the Spellbulary in their respective age groups. I’m happy that those two siblings were my brother, Vihaan Vashishtha, and I. Hopefully we can hold this record for a while. Tanisha Vashishtha, Y7A
