![]() Students of Years 8, 9, 10 and certain students of Year 7(based on teacher recommendation) will be writing six contests run by the American Scholastic Mathematics Association (ASMA) over this academic year. Each contest is made up of 7 questions to be completed in 35 minutes. The contest papers will be marked at school. ASMA will compare the cumulative scores worldwide and announce the result in the Final Awards Newsletter. The student with the highest cumulative score for each school will receive an individual Highest Scoring Student Award Certificate. On the left is the list of the students, in alphabetical order, who performed well on contest 1, getting at least 4 questions correct out of 7. You can also read a short note from two of the participants-Mrs. Ray The ASMA questions challenged the students to make them think outside the box. The Y10’s were able to achieve higher scores, as they had a greater knowledge and understanding of the questions, whereas the younger, less experienced students, of Y8 and Y9 found the test fairly challenging. An anonymous student from Y9 said that he found the test fairly challenging as he rated it 5.5 out of 10 (10 being extremely hard, 1 being extremely easy). He said that the last two questions were ‘enough to challenge that young mind of his’. The mathematical concepts presented were familiar to most students, although a complicated twist was added to them -Martin Francony and Edward Williams (Year 10)
